Write tests for Workspace1D & Workspace2D

Description

There are no unit tests for Workspace1D or Workspace2D. Given their fundamental role in the framework it is essential that these are added.

N.B. Having said this, there are fairly likely to be some significant changes to these classes very soon so it may be worth holding off until after that.
