Mantid slows down with 20+ small workspaces

Description
After generating 20 or so small workspaces in python the Mantid user interface, especially after attempting to maximise the “workspaces list box†is going VERY slow, even says “not responding†(possibly only an issue on the special version produced by Steve W on Monday).

I'll accept the "works for me" argument.
Tested with a total of ~100 workspaces (slightly more with remnants from other tests). 50 of them being tiny things created with CreateWorkspace algorithm being 5 bins by 2 spectra. rest being around 14 spectra of nearly 2000 bins. No noticable performance decrease - even on my relatively poor machine.

From Richard Heenan: This is still a problem in latest download, 1.1.8420 (still reporting 31 dec in “help aboutâ€, but really 10/1/11) maximising the workspace list is causing “screen refresh†problems, in the presence of a large “results logâ€, can give someone a demo if needed.
