Styling on Linux - Poor Contrast?

Description
Testing on mantidlx1, viewing data in workspace contrast between text and background was very poor (screenshot attached). Is this as it is everywhere by default on Linux, a result of the x-forwarding process or some freak of my user account on this machine?

I think this was down the the default theme in RHEL 5. It certainly doesn't look like this in my ubuntu box or the RHEL6 machine.
