Have a look at nexpy and consider shipping it with Mantid

Description

Rob Dalgliesh wants to be able to access generic things from a NeXus file, his example is the period/proton_charge entries. The nexpy module will allow this functionality in Python and would gives users immediate access to things that they would otherwise have to wait for us to provide wrappers for.

Unfortunately, nexpy says it is still under development and they have no stable release. The source hasn't been touched in about 2 years so it's probably not quite as simple as taking it as it is at the moment as we'd need to check how stable the dev version is.

I think the basic framework is pretty stable. They were trying to do things with a GUI that was much less stable, but we aren't interested in that.

We have decided to go with the official NeXus python bindings instead as they are more likely to be developed.
