Graph zooming inconsistent behaviour

I've been looking at the behaviour of zooming 1D graphs using the mouse wheel on various platforms. This is when the panning tool icon is selected.

On RHEL6, I find that it zooms in the opposite manner to that which I would expect - pushing the wheel away from me makes the graph smaller instead of zooming in.

On my Mac Pro (when I can get the fancy mouse to work), it does what I would expect. However, the zooming behaviour on changing the script font is reversed compared to other platforms.

On Windows and my touchpad mac laptop, graphs don't zoom properly at all - trying to do so instead just stretches or squeezes the abscissa.

Actually, things are consistent between Windows & RHEL6 - I think I must have forgotten to select the panning tool on Windows before.

So things are fairly consistent apart from my claim that things go the opposite way to what I'd expect. Turns out this behaviour comes from outside out code (qwtplot?) anyhow.
