Streamline pipeline creations during view switching

Description

Adding the scaling plugin has highlighted some areas where the view switching is not very smooth and sometimes will try and draw the wrong thing depending on what the user has highlighted in the pipeline browser. Look into ways to be a bit more agnostic about what is in the pipeline when switching views.
