Population of file browser window can be slow

Description

It just took 20-30 seconds to populate the window with the files from my desktop. Surely it shouldn't take this long.

While I'm on the subject, it also doesn't append the file extension automatically when you're saving.

(In [2797]) Reverted Qt file dialog access to use native environment ones. This means that the shell-like matching is now not available and the LoadRaw algorithms now accept raw and s* as extensions. Closes #704
