Richard asked to extend the Mask Syntax as described in #8972.
I have suggested Richard
Why not use the InstrumentView to generate the mask you want? In the instrumentView you are able to create mask using squares, circles. Using it in the cylindrical view, you will be able to get the correct position of the detectors inside the tube. You could them apply the mask to the workspace and point that specific workspace as the mask template. The masking process would be go through the workspace to process and apply mask to all the spectra that is masked inside the mask template workspace. Besides, we could add some tools to allow us to construct the mask based on previous mask templates.
The idea is to extend the Mask Syntax to use a MaskFile to define the spectra to mask. To complete this solution, an UNMASK tool should be provided by InstrumentView.
