SANS: Set the moderator to sample distance to that in the nexus/raw file

Description (last modified by Anders Markvardsen) (diff)

Could we use the moderator to sample distance stored in the nxs file, as an alternative to the one in the idf ? This would bring Mantid in line with the historic practise in COLETTE. Would need to have a command in the mask file to activate this, else we would have some horrible backward compatibility issues. e.g. SAMPLEDIST/NXS or /RAW and SAMPLEDIST/IDF [default] SAMPLE/OFFSET would apply in all cases, though the value for this should hopefully be zero for /NXS if the instrument scientist has fed the correct value into the nxs file via SECI.

This distance should be reported in the Geometry tab.

The sample to detector distance shouldn't be changed by this setting!

Steve writes:

Ok, in the NeXus file, the moderator-sample distance is stored in

\raw_data_1\instrument\moderator\distance

And appears as a negative figure (the run I’m looking at, SANS2D 11585, it’s -19.334 m).

I assume this needs to have any SAMPLE/OFFSET value in the User file applied to it...

For comparison, the SANS2D IDF has a value of 19.281 m.

Last talk to Stephen, it was decided that the correct approach will be:

  • get the information from IDF
  • override it using the SAMPLE/OFFSET

do not care about the sample distance in the nexus file.

Check that this is what it is doing. If it is correct, put this ticket as invalid.

This is the current behaviour. The SAMPLE/OFFSET changes the SAMPLE_Z_CORR. It can be overrided by the ISISGUI, through the Geometry Tab, Z-offset. But this is allowed, as by default, the ISIS GUI is allowed to override any option in the MaskFile.
