File dialog on RHEL6 doesn't show extensions

Description

When bringing up a file dialog on Redhat EL6, via for example the Load dialog (uses MWRunFiles underneath), and then looking at the drop-down list of file types all you get is a long list of entries that say just "Files" and then finally the "All files" one.

For some reason, the native dialog removes the part in brackets.

Possible solutions:

  • Don't use the native dialog - the Qt one works fine.
  • Use something other than () - square brackets work, for example.
  • The "Files" tag is not very informative anyway. It would be better if it contained useful text (e.g. ASCII files) - then the hidden extensions are not a problem. That's presumably the intention - that the text is enough.

While we're there, it's annoying that this comes up with the first entry (in this case event_nxs) highlighted even though the odds are you want something else. It probably needs to be "All Files".

We need to be careful about using the QT dialog, we used this early in the project nad found it was very slow with large directories of files.
