Measure loading performance for large files and optimize

Description

This is primarily large event nexus files. Measure where the majority of the time is being taken and look where optimizations could be performed.

If is appears that the nexus layer is an issue then this ticket 8920 might be worth doing, otherwise it should be closed as a wontfix.
